What a clock change does to your alarm
Your phone handles the change for you: set to update time automatically, it shifts at the right moment and your alarm still rings at the wall-clock time you chose. The problem is not the alarm — it is that a spring-forward quietly deletes an hour of your night.
That matters more than people expect. Losing an hour deepens sleep inertia, the groggy state right after waking when your rational brain is still offline. In that window, dismissing an alarm is a reflex you can perform without ever really waking up — which is exactly how people kill alarms with no memory of it.
How to take the hit out of the change
- Start three or four days early. Move bedtime and wake-up 15–20 minutes at a time instead of swallowing the full hour overnight.
- Get light immediately after waking. Daylight is the strongest signal your body clock responds to — far stronger than willpower.
- Do not add backup alarms. A row of alarms teaches your brain the first one is optional, which is the opposite of what you need on a short night.
- Protect the night before. The morning problem is usually decided the previous evening.
If you want the longer version, the full guide to resetting a sleep schedule covers the same mechanics over a couple of weeks, and the sleep calculator will give you a bedtime for the new time.
