To wake up at 6:00 AM on a cycle boundary, fall asleep at one of these:
- 8:45 PM6 cycles · 9 hours
- 10:15 PM5 cycles · 7 hours 30 min
- 11:45 PM4 cycles · 6 hours
- 1:15 AM3 cycles · 4 hours 30 min
Assumes about 15 minutes to fall asleep and 90-minute cycles. Both vary from person to person and night to night — treat these as targets, not deadlines.
If you need to wake up at…
Pick your alarm time to see every bedtime that lands on a cycle boundary.
If you are going to bed at…
Pick when you are actually turning the light off, and see when to set the alarm.
How the maths works
A night of sleep is not one continuous state. You move through light sleep, deep sleep and REM in cycles that average about 90 minutes. Waking at the end of a cycle, in light sleep, feels dramatically easier than being pulled out of deep sleep halfway through one — that horrible hit-by-a-truck feeling has a name, sleep inertia.
So the calculator counts whole cycles from the time you give it and adds about 15 minutes for falling asleep, because you do not lose consciousness the second your head lands.
Where these calculators oversell themselves
Almost every sleep calculator online presents 90 minutes as a fixed constant. It is not. Cycles run roughly 80 to 110 minutes, they get longer towards morning, and they differ between people and between nights. Nobody can predict your boundaries to the minute without measuring your sleep.
What that means in practice: these times are good targets, and a genuinely useful way to choose between two bedtimes. They are not worth losing sleep over — literally. If landing on a boundary would cost you an hour of total sleep, take the sleep. Sleep-cycle alarm clocks have the same limitation.
The part the calculator cannot solve
Choosing the right time is the easy half. The hard half is being conscious when it arrives — and if you routinely dismiss alarms without remembering it, no amount of cycle maths will help. That failure happens on autopilot, before your rational brain is online, which is why the only reliable fix is an alarm you have to earn your way out of.
